HIGH MORTALITY AND REDUCED OVIPOSITION: EFFICACY OF THE LEAF POWDER OF GREENWAYODENDRON SUAVEOLENS (ENGL. AND DIELS) VERDC. (ANNONACEAE) AGAINST CALLOSOBRUCHUS MACULATUS (FAB.) (COLEOPTERA: CHRYSOMELIDAE)

چکیده

Increasing evidence suggests that the use of synthetic insecticides in controlling stored product pests poses significant threats to human health and food security. Although indigenous plants control have been widely suggested, only a few empirical exists on efficacy these plant species. This study investigated leaf powder an plant, Greenwayodendron suaveolens (Engl. & Diels.) Verdc. (Annonaceae) against Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) infesting cowpea. Ten pairs sexed freshly emerged adults C. were exposed G. at rates 0.0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5g/40 g cowpea seeds plastic containers. Adult beetle mortality was monitored every 24 hours for 7 days. All treatments elicited adult maculatus. Results indicated over 80% days after infestation. Beetle increased with increasing period exposure powder. It observe 2.5 significantly reduced oviposition by 60%. The results suggest high reduction rate caused could be attributed presence one or more bioactive compounds as has documented other members family Annonaceae. Consequently, it is hypothesized can used alternative conventional owing its lack residual effect, low cost, easy mode preparation application

Oviposition decisions in the seed beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae): effects of seed size on superparasitism

The seed parasite Callosobruchus maculatus generally disperses eggs uniformly among seeds. We used cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata) of two class sizes (large and small) to test predictions based on a simple resource threshold model that females will distribute eggs among seeds in a manner that maximizes the amount of resources allocated to each offspring. When females were presented with multiple se...
